The Friends of the South Pasadena Library are putting a new spin on one of the San Gabriel Valley’s longest-running holiday traditions this year. Their annual Holiday Book Sale returns Dec. 4-6 at the Library Community Room on El Centro, and for the first time it’s being paired with a Holiday Marketplace spotlighting local artisans — a small but meaningful shift that local business owners should take note of.
The book sale itself is a community institution: shoppers can dig through tables of current and classic fiction, children’s books, art and coffee-table titles, antiquarian finds, and shelves of DVDs, CDs, games, puzzles and graphic novels, plus books by local authors and artists. Doors open Friday evening, with early entry for Friends members at the $20 support level and complimentary gift wrapping while supplies last. Saturday and Sunday bring extended weekend hours for the broader public.
What’s new is Sunday’s Holiday Marketplace, where local makers will sell handmade ceramics, jewelry, art cards and fiber art alongside the book tables. It’s a modest addition, but it reflects a pattern worth watching across greater Los Angeles: community nonprofits and small-business advocates are increasingly bundling fundraising events with maker markets, giving independent artisans a low-overhead way to reach holiday shoppers while the host organization draws extra foot traffic.
For LA-area business owners, especially retailers, makers and anyone selling gifts this season, the South Pasadena event is a useful reminder that community partnerships can be a smart, low-cost distribution channel in November and December. A library, a chamber of commerce, a church bazaar, or a school fundraiser can all double as pop-up retail space for a few hours — often with built-in foot traffic a solo vendor couldn’t generate alone. If you make or sell handmade goods, it’s worth scanning local community calendars this time of year for similar marketplace add-ons.
Proceeds from the book sale support the South Pasadena Library’s materials budget, its Summer Reading Program and other special programming, funded alongside the Friends group’s bookstore revenue and membership dues. The sale runs Friday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. (members-only early entry at 5 p.m.), Saturday, Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m., when the Holiday Marketplace joins the book tables. The Library Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro St. in South Pasadena.
