If you’ve never had pizza served as a sandwich, you may soon get the chance closer to home. Sandough, the Melrose Avenue restaurant that built a following by using slow-fermented pizza dough as the “bread” for Italian-inspired fillings, finished in the oven rather than served cold, is leaving Hollywood for the first time. Owner Hakob Badalyan has confirmed two new locations: one at 4007 W. Riverside Drive in Burbank, set to open in mid-November, and another at 126 S. Brand Boulevard in Glendale, targeted for late November or early December.
The Burbank spot is moving into a space that previously housed a burger restaurant, while the Glendale location takes over a former Mediterranean restaurant on Brand Boulevard, one of the city’s busiest restaurant corridors. Both cities have spent the last couple of years courting new food and retail tenants as foot traffic shifts toward walkable downtown cores, and a proven concept expanding out of Hollywood is exactly the kind of signal local economic development offices like to see.
For Burbank and Glendale business owners, the news is a reminder of how much the regional restaurant scene has been reshuffling lately, with chains and independent concepts alike testing second and third locations outside their original neighborhoods. A well-reviewed concept choosing your commercial corridor over another part of the city is free marketing: it draws new foot traffic, media coverage, and curiosity from residents who might not have had a reason to visit that block before.
It’s also a useful data point for anyone leasing or evaluating commercial space in either city right now. Former restaurant locations with existing kitchen infrastructure, like the two Sandough is taking over, tend to move faster than empty shells, something worth keeping in mind for business owners scouting their own expansion.
No exact opening dates have been announced yet, so diners and fellow business owners alike will want to watch Sandough’s channels as November approaches.
